Bibhu Mahapatra’s Fashion Mantra for Success

Bibhu Mohapatra, the India-born, New York-based internationally acclaimed fashion designer, who was recently in the headlines for dressing the US first lady Michelle Obama, shared his success mantra, while addressing the students of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bhubaneswar.

The forty-year-old designer, who is on a ten-day visit to India, revealed that self belief, being focussed and being nice to others are the three things that have helped him succeed.

Mr. Mohapatra has been trying to promote his native state Orissa’s traditional handloom and crafts in the global market for quite some time now.

Addressing the NIFT gathering, he said the local Oriya artisans weave a variety of exotic fabrics, which can garner huge demand internationally if presented with a modern and contemporary twist.

He added that in his constant endeavour to encourage ethnic Oriya crafts, fabrics and techniques, he has initiated a project called ‘Design bank’ with the Orissa state government for which he has designed 40 to 50 samples.

Thailand to soon revive Bangkok Fashion City Project

The Bangkok Fashion City project may soon see the daylight as the Thailand Government plans to restart the project, initiated by Thaksin administration, next year, Industry Minister MR Pongsvas Svasti, has said.

Started in 2003, the 1.8-billion-baht program's objective was to establish Bangkok as a regional fashion hub and eventually as the world fashion leader. However, the project was stalled at the end of 2006 because of political reasons and since then the country’s fashion industry is going downhill resulting in very limited number of designers remaining and very few brand start-ups.

Moreover, the textile industry in Thailand has been badly impacted by the Government’s 300-baht-daily-wage policy. The sudden rise in wages has further increased the already high cost of production of in the country.

Industry experts believe that the situation is going to get worsened by the formation of the Asean Economic Community in 2015, an ambitious project which will combine ten Southeast Asian nations to create an EU-style single market.

Emerging fashion designers benefit from Blueprint & AFS

Just recently, Singapore has hosted two major fashion events which were aimed at catapulting homegrown talent to the international stage. Blueprint 2012, which showcased primarily up-and-coming Asian designers, in tandem with the Third Asia Fashion Summit (AFS), which brought together the global fashion industry’s thought-leaders such as Nicola Formichetti, served as platforms for local and regional fashion labels to go global.

Singapore company registration specialist Rikvin is confident that the events are testament to Singapore’s ambition to become Asia’s leading fashion hub for emerging fashion designers. Furthermore, as international and Asian fashion buyers look east for fresh blood, Rikvin has determined three critical factors that bode well for up-and-coming fashion designers who are considering Singapore company formation.

Both Blueprint and Asia Fashion Summit were organized by Asia Fashion Exchange (AFX), a private-public sector conglomerate aimed at positioning Singapore as Asia’s leading fashion hub. AFX consists of the Textile and Fashion Federation of Singapore (TaFf), International Enterprise (IE) Singapore, Singapore Tourism Board (STB), SPRING Singapore (SPRING) as well as Mercury Marketing and Communications.

Each gown has been customized with Egyptian inspired panelling throughout the collection. Heavy ‘hand dyed’ silks and flowing georgettes encase the hand beaded finishes and art deco accents.

The collection is styled with a selection of accessories and embellishments inspired by the elegance and drama of the Luxor temple; making it possible for clients to style their own individual look.

Geometric lines are complimented by delicate jewelled detailing and the softness of the fabrics. Plunging back lines are softened and...

Camilla d'Errico launches high-quality clothing line

Graphic novelist and fine artist Camilla d'Errico has announced the start of a limited-edition clothing line, releasing the first of what will be a series of new items over the course of 2012.

For years Camilla has partnered with a variety of exclusive brands, like the recent collaboration with Hamburger Disco, and such experience has set the high-quality standard apparent in her independent line launching.

To debut the clothing line, five new items have been released to eager fans online:

-Two bamboo-fabric infinity scarfs, one based on Camilla's "The Matchmaker" and the other based on her piece "Tablemanners"

-An organic viscose women's shirt with a cropped neckline featuring full-color art from "Sweet Peacock"

-Hand-embellished by Camilla herself, a unisex hoodie from Alternative Earth with a full-front zipper and large-print artwork based on "The Wings"

-Inspired by the film Donnie Darko, a men's t-shirt featuring dark navy or glow-in-the-dark paint applied by Camilla

As will be the case with more than a dozen new items yet to be released, each of the new clothing products is limited in number and of the highest quality possible, intended to be used for years to come. And because items like the Donnie Darko t-shirt and "The Wings" hoodie are hand-painted by Camilla - no two will be the same, proving that style can still be an artistic expression.

Designer Donna Karan promotes craftwork of Haiti

Internationally-acclaimed fashion designer Donna Karan accompanied Haitian Minister of the Interior, Thierry Mayard-Paul, as he visited the cities of Jeremiah and Jacmel during his "listening campaign."

The visits, a continuation of the Minister's tour of Haiti's heartland, are aimed at advancing the government's goals for building a sustainable economy through investments that support decentralization and drive job creation across all sectors, and throughout all the communities of Haiti.

Minister Mayard Paul and Ms. Karan met with Jacmel's Tourism Minister Ms. Stephanie B. Villedrouin and visited several hotels and tourist sites damaged by the January 2010 earthquake, including the Hotel Florita, the Jacmelienne Hotel and other severely damaged structures along the coast of the Southeast.

According to the Minister, these structures hold investment opportunities for the region. "Prior to the earthquake, Jacmel was one of Haiti's wealthiest cities, with considerable tourist assets," said Mayard-Paul. "With its favorable location, it holds great potential for development and job creation for this region."

In visiting the city of Jeremiah, Mayard-Paul solicited the needs of residents, and vowed to deliver on their requests for jobs through the ongoing efforts of the Martelly government to make Haiti a country favorable to business for national and international investors.
